Why I don’t view the Scorbus relationship as platonic

madlymacaroon:

Disclaimer: I am aware that people vary with their experience in relationships and how they view them. I acknowledge that is possible to see the Scorbus relationship as platonic. The post below is why I personally don’t view it that way.

I have a very very close friend of the same gender as me (biologically female but I’m not exactly CIS). I’m to the point where I call her my platonic wife because we are that close. She checks up on me pretty much everyday to make sure my depression is in check, sometimes she’s better at it than my own husband. We tell each other everything, know everything about each other, hug each other, watch out for each other, and we’re pretty much each other’s only really close friend. I would die for her and she would me. We are arguably the Scorbus dynamic if you view it as platonic.

So all this being said, reasons why I don’t feel the Scorbus relationship is platonic when comparing my personal platonic love to it:

Point 1: I would not be jealous if she was talking to someone of the opposite sex. It is argued that Scorpius was suspicious of Delphi but it does not say this at all in the text. It is also argued that he was jealous that Albus was making a friend outside of him. Comparing this with my own platonic relationship I would not be afraid that she would make a better friend then me. I know that our relationship is so strong that there is no one that could take my place. I think that Scorpius is smart enough to know this. He knows that Albus has no interest in making other friends outside of him. They were in Hogwarts together a few years before that scene happened and Albus had plenty of opportunity to make friends. Did he? No. I think the jealousy is stemmed from something else entirely, we all know what that is

Point 2. I would not be utterly hysterical if my friends dad separated us. Those who have seen the play say that Scorpius is in the background crying pretty much hysterically when he over hears Harry talking to Mcgonagall about separating them. Draco also barges into Harry’s space asking Harry to reconsider because his son has been crying and depressed. Comparing this to my own platonic relationship, yes I would be sad that we were forced to be separated but not to this degree. I think she would agree with me.

Point 3. I would not say such romantic lines to her such as:

“If I had to choose a companion to be at the end of eternal darkness with, I’d choose you”

Or

“You’re kind, from the depths of your belly to the tips of your fingers”

Or

“And it’s something I should have said a long time ago. In fact, you’re probably the best person I know. And you don’t- you couldn’t- hold me back. You make me stronger”

While yes, I think these things about her but I would not say them in such a romantic light. I would say things like

“You’re too kind”

and

“You make my life better”

The statements between Scorpius and Albus are wildly romantic,  I don’t know many platonic friends especially 14 year old boys who use that type of language with each other.

Point 4. If my friend had a crush on someone and was turned down, I would encourage her to keep going. I would tell her there are other people out there for her. Albus does not do this, in fact, he tells Scorpius to give up and that Rose isn’t going to give in. If you read in-between the lines in this scene it seems Albus does not want Scorpius to get a gifriend at all. He does not encourage it, I believe it’s because Albus has a slight pang of jealousy here.

I’ve been comparing their relationship with my own platonic relationships for weeks and I’m sorry but I have a hard time seeing it. If those who see it as platonic would take their gender glasses off, put all gender aside they would see that is a lot more. Those with the platonic argument is constantly saying they like girls because of what happened with Rose and Delphi.

Rose had one compliment with the bread shoved in somewhere in the text. Delphi was a woman much older than Albus that was unattainable and evil.

Scorpius and Albus had all the above I mentioned. So…take your gender glasses off…and you decide.
