Can I just say, when I dated guys and had a boyfriend I 100% felt pressure to shave my legs and wear makeup and always look my best for him, and now that I’m only with a girl I feel so much more secure to not do those things that I never liked doing to begin with. My girlfriend has literally changed my life. She has helped me learn to love my body hair, to feel beautiful even when I’m not trying, to feel comfortbale just existing as a human, and then some. Everytime I was with my boyfriend I was sucking in my stomach, I was hoping that he was looking at me from the right angle, I was monitoring the way that we interacted—everything. Even though he didn’t necessarily expect these things of me, MEN always had. Society always has. Once I realized that I’m a lesbian I felt so much more free. I already wasn’t what society wanted me to be and it was just so much easier for everything else to follow! The stereotype of lesbians not shaving, not wearing makeup, not “trying”, being “ugly” etc. was actually liberating because finally what people expected from me was as natural as breathing. I would never want to distance myself from those stereotypes because they helped me find the confidence to be the person I’ve always wanted to be. I can honestly and sincerely say that realizing that I’m a lesbian was the best thing that ever happened to me.
